The World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker is the premier poker tournament in the world. The world’s best as well as many amateurs get together every summer to take their shot at a gold bracelet and tons of cash. I have been fortunate to play at this event the last couple of years and thought I would share some things you should expect if you want to go play or even just check out the World Series.

First, expect a crowd. Thousands of people will be playing in the different events that go on during the series and the Amazon Room is always packed with players and spectators. The first two to three days is a complete and utter zoo.

Next, if you’re planning on playing in events, think about investing in some satellites. Satellites are smaller tournaments, usually single table tournaments that people can play to try and win their entry into an event. A satellite for a $1000 buy-in even is $125. A $1500 satellite is $175. The satellites go up in price from there all the way to a $5000 satellite for the $50000 H.O.R.S.E event. These tournaments are great practice and a great way to save money.

If you’re planning on playing a lot of events, then you better plan on having a deep bankroll. On average, the typical buy-in for an event is $1500 and the buy-ins go all the way to $50,000. Typically a player should expect to take $100,000 to $150,000 if they are going to play a big schedule at the series. The most I have taken to the series is $10,000 but then again, I didn’t play in the main event.

There are plenty of cash games at the Rio during the WSOP, but the cash games do tend to be higher limit cash games. If you’re a $5-10 and below player, don’t expect to find a game that often. If you’re a higher limit player, you should be fine.

The WSOP is a lot of fun, both as a player and a spectator. You can play against the best in the world, or if you’re a spectator, you can see some of the players from TV up close and personal. If you ever get the chance to go, take advantage of it. You won’t be disappointed.
